5 Children’s Activities To Do Indoors For the Winter – The days are shorter, the nights are longer, and the temperatures are dropping. The cold of winter will be upon us before you know it, making it very difficult to get your children to go outside and play in the fresh air. Fortunately, there are plenty of fun and creative activities to keep your children entertained inside that they’ll love! Here are five indoor activities your kids will adore!
Play with board games
One of my favorite activities for my kids to do when it’s cold outside is playing board games. The whole family can get together and play a game, like Monopoly or Life. This is a great way to spend time together and have some fun. There are also many other indoor activities that you can do with your children during the winter months. Games are an easy way to get everyone laughing and having fun together. Our favorite board game companies include Milton Bradley, Hasbro, and Jenga. There is a whole world of games out there waiting to be played! Be sure to lay out snacks such as apple slices, popcorn, fruit snacks, and crackers to munch on while you play. It will make it more enjoyable for everyone.
Get active
Put on music, dance around, and put on a show. Tell stories together as you go through different parts of the house. Play games like I Spy, where one person has to guess what the other is describing before they can say anything else. Hide and seek is another great game for parents and siblings to play safely in the house. This is also an opportunity to exercise together. For example, you can do yoga together. All you need are some mats, loose clothing such as a t-shirt and joggers from Presley Couture, and a Yoga video.
Play video games as a family
Not all video games are bloody and gory. There are also video games that the whole family can enjoy, besides being educational. Games like Journey and Civilization have been ranked among the most popular, critically acclaimed, influential, and highest-selling games. There are also games by Lego, Minecraft, Hot Wheels, and Just Dance 2022. Remember to always check for the ratings and the suggested age-appropriate group when choosing games for the family. To protect your controllers and thumbs, add some Playstation grips from Lizard Skins to make everyone comfortable.
Read books
Reading is an excellent way for children to spend their time indoors. It also helps develop vocabulary and comprehension skills. Reading is an activity that doesn’t require much participation from others, so that kids can do it on their own or with someone else! Here are some of my favorite children’s books to read during the winter:
- The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
- Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
- Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne
- Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
Even baby can partake in this activity, especially right before nap time. If reading to more than one kid, place baby somewhere safe where they can sit up to see the book and pictures, such as an Ergobaby Evolve Baby Bouncer, and have everyone sit in a circle for reading time. You can read more than one book throughout the day instead of in just one sitting.
Make treats
Make holiday cookies at home. Decorate sugar cookie dough with red and green sprinkles, or add peppermint extract for a festive minty flavor. Another idea is to make Rice Krispie treats in fun shapes like Christmas trees, gingerbread men, or Santa hats! It doesn’t just need to be sweets. You can make a pizza together, a salad, a fruit salad, and even something as simple as a gelatin dessert.
These are all great ways to keep your children entertained and active while staying inside. Make sure to get out and enjoy the snow as well!
